Crystals are amplifying minerals. You have a crystal in a radio - it amplifies the sound waves. You have a crystal in a television set - it amplifies the light waves. When you hold crystals, they amplify thought waves.       Shirley MacLaine

In his, “Curious Lore of Precious Stones”, George Kunz, consultant to Tiffany’s and one of North America’s foremost gemologists said that “precious and semi-precious stones have many qualities beyond their physical attributes, they have remarkable monetary value, and in the opinion of most of mankind, from the earliest times to the present, they have abilities and characteristics that can only be termed “magical”. Agates were said to cure insomnia, hematite to stem a bleed and opal to bring bad luck. Rubies of both the male and female varieties were thought to “protect fruit trees from tempests”.

Seeing himself as a man of science, Kunz explores the origins of the lore surrounding gems and crystals and makes a pretty thorough attempt to investigate the underlying reasons for the beliefs in the metaphysical properties of stones.

Kunz points out that the use of gems and crystals for adornment probably stemmed from the use by more ancient cultures of stones as talismans and amulets. In fact he proposes that the ancients had very “complicated rules and observances in the handling and wearing of specific stones, he said it indicated a great deal of thought and reflection.

In “fetishism” inanimate objects are believed to have their own thought and will and though these qualities are near impossible to prove, the belief in what is life and what certain stones can do is as legitimate as any other way of thinking until there is absolute conclusive proof in one direction or another.

Exploring deeper into the modern view of stones and crystals there is a certain poetry and artistry to the movement. As is so beautifully stated on the blog, “Tiny Rituals”, everything is energy and in one shimmer crystals capture the sun, the moon and the mountains”.

Aesthetics are closely wound up in the world of crystals. Aside from the metaphysical properties, there is the adornment aspect of the stone and a deep though sometimes quite varying belief in what the powers of each crystal might be. Summarizing divergent views there is a commonality in that most understand crystals to carry energy and as is pointed out, we humans are made of energy and under certain conditions we can exchange energy with the crystals – Sonali Sonjani.

Emily Rekstis of “Healing crystals 101” advises in the choosing of your crystals. Obviously not every crystal will do for any person. We are all different and see the world in different ways. Emily says, when you feel drawn to a particular stone, it is most probably your sub-conscious guiding you”. The stone is as unique to you as it is unique as an individual in the cosmos.

Our company, “Dark Star Crystal Mines” harvests a certain suite of crystals from forest shrouded calcite fissures. Digging in the incessant hum of mosquito swarms we bring huge amphibole, pyroxene, titinite and apatite crystals to the surface. Most times once nearing the crystal beds we set shovels aside and feel with our fingers. Once scarred by a shovel blade a beautiful stone is marred forever. We have damaged nature and it is irreplaceable. We seek to avoid damage at all costs. If a crystal is likely to be damaged by extraction, we do not extract it at all.

So inspired by the beauty and power of the natural world around us we sought guidance from our metaphysical mentors and created a Dark Star Crystal oracle deck. As we were told by our co-creators, “The power is not in the cards, the cards are a portal to help you find the power. Now if its crystals that you really love, the cards and the actual specimens from our source location should certainly compliment the working of the whole process. You will be tapping into those things that remain unseen in ordinary speculation.

It’s not hard for us to see your attraction to beautiful crystal specimens and as you are possibly drawn to some of our crystals, we were in turn drawn to our fissures. It was pure chance that we stopped where we did and wandered into the forest. Who would have thought where that unusual afternoon would lead us – three average guys who now own Dark Star Crystal Mines. We believe it was more than a random happening.

On our Southern property you can expect to find mainly dark and often lustrous amphiboles. There are over 70 varieties and most recently a whole new species was discovered just nearby in identical geology. Our northern property is a different cat. pegmatites, feldspar and quartz.

We also see large black sheets of biotite in our fissures. They are so well known for their dispelling of negative vibes, to cloak and shield your metaphysical tools from malevolent influence if that’s how you choose to use them. There are also pyroxenites, titinite, apatite and monazite, each crystal with its own special properties. Microcline feldspar is found in white to ivory shapes of astounding geometric beauty and also on the eastern side of our property, pinkish plagioclase from pegmatites that appear to have risen up mysteriously amongst the calcite veins. Still to us, the site is somewhat of a mystery, but rest assured, what you might carry from the ground is unquestionably natural, primary and unique. I say primary because of the crystal’s birth being so far back in time. The area from which we now conduct our supervised collecting trips was back then beneath an enormous mountain range, long since eroded and forgotten (Grenville orogeny).

No one stone has any identical partner and at times we have even been inspired to name them. “Dark Heart” was our first named matrix that we pulled from the “Whale Hole”. I can only describe that discovery in terms of sheer awe – a feeling of wonder and spirituality, that the natural forces (whatever they are) had delivered a being of most unbelievable perfection to us. Feldspar and amphibole in perfect crystals spun into a vortex of shapes very much akin to a DNA helix. It was like looking an ancient god in the face. Those wondrous finds that we have gathered over our many years in the region are now up for sale, though the price in these specific cases is open to negotiation – monetary factors are not the only consideration (and the Dark Heart is not for sale).
