Of Rock and Mineral Gatherings ...

The Bancroft Gemboree...

"The concrete shell of the curling rink is your first view of the gemboree. It's also the venue from which presenters like myself can talk to fellow rockhounds. The other forum is a further 100 yards up the hill. The dust and tented pavilions have an exotic feel. It reminds me of something out of Kipling, a wind-blown plateau in Rajasthan, maybe the Pushkar Fair or the festival at Imilchil where Berber tribes converge. Other far-flung gatherings are greeted with no less promise than this."

The Paris Rock and Mineral Show

Among Ontario rock and mineral shows, the Paris Rock and Mineral Show stands out as one of southern Ontario’s premier mineral events.

As far as Ontario rock and mineral shows, this one is smaller, but bats above its league.

For me, the Paris Rock and Mineral Show is one of the better shows, missing only one thing—a communal place to enjoy coffee and watch the rockhounds mingle. There are chairs aplenty in the hallway adjoining the two main venues and the auction room, but what you see are the new arrivals and those lucky hounds leaving clutching bags of pretties that they’ve purchased.

Some are looking for jewellery, others cabbing or faceting material. It’s not unusual to find crystals from the most far-flung corners of the world. Some like local stuff, rich green apatites from the Bancroft area vein dykes, radioactives from Bancroft area pegmatites, or amethyst from the famous Ontario pay to dig mines in Thunder Bay.

Whether you're an experienced rockhound, a budding geologist, or someone simply fascinated by the natural world, this is the place to be when your natural predilection towards crystal hunting and rockhounding is curtailed by snow or the price of gas. After the May 24  weekend, serious collectors start looking to the wilderness for where they can find their own crystals.

Located in the picturesque town of Paris, Ontario, this particular Ontario rock and mineral show brings together collectors, vendors, and curious visitors from across the region. For two exciting days, the show becomes a hub of discovery, learning, and appreciation for the Earth's natural wonders. Most of the regional shows are 2 days, the gem expo occurs 3 times a year at the Hyatt in Toronto and the Gemboree in Bancroft lasts 4 days and you need to book your accommodation well in advance.

How knowledgeable are vendors at Ontario rock and mineral shows?

Most of these people are experts and much as they might not look at things from the scientific filter, they have a knowledge that’s honed by practical experience, born into the trade; shaped genetically. It’s good to hear things from their point of view. Speaking to a lady from Quebec who was selling fossils and bones of vanished species I learned of how the gases within the bones expanded when lifted from their watery graves. Without great care they shatter in their changed environment.

Community and Connections at Ontario Rock and Mineral Shows

Ontario rock and mineral shows are as much about people as they are about minerals, fostering connections across the province’s collecting hierarchy.

At Ontario rock and mineral shows there’s the happiness of meeting old acquaintances and learning of their challenges through the year. Many travel to remote and out of the way places to source their supplies. Some are just struggling to establish a new business.

The key players in Ontario’s mineral scene become fewer as time passes and others move up to challenge the inner ranks. There is a hierarchy of collectors and unless you have been around, you’ll seldom realize it. I suppose the sellers also have their hierarchy, we’re just not amongst them to know it. I recognize some of the merchants from 30 years back. They are still there because they are successful.

At the  Bancroft gemboree, presided over by their mascot "Rocky the Rockhound",  there’s  hands-on experience with a variety of interactive activities – gold panning, the outside traders and also  geologist led mineral tours. I remember the one such tour that I took to the Richardson fission mine. It was good to meet others  who love the same things that I do and that brings me to the memory of the last presentation that I gave there and the ensuing trip to an abandoned uranium mine. It wasn’t planned, but there  seemed to be such eagerness around a field trip after the talk, we just went ahead and did it.

"Mineral shows are  the perfect opportunity to spark a love for geology in the up and coming generations. Basically they are a starting point for young mineral enthusiasts to bud into top rate geologists. Looking at Ontario’s future it looks like we’ll need a fair number of geologists in the future. Our critical minerals in Ontario will be the underpinning of what we become. Visiting the show young and upcoming rockhounds will leave with a newfound appreciation for the Earth’s beauty and perhaps even a shiny rock or two to take home!"

I met several YouTubers who watch Caver 461 and Facebook collectors contemplating a trip up to our Dark Star claim as soon as booking opens. We begin filling our schedule in early May, so drop us a line around then and we’ll get you on the schedule. We soon begin scouting the claim to determine readiness for visiting collectors— the snow must be melted and the ground thawed to allow visitors.

Global Specimens at Ontario Rock and Mineral Shows

Ontario rock and mineral shows feature specimens from around the world, from Turkish epidote to Himalayan peridot.

At any of the Ontario rock and mineral shows, you can explore an incredible selection of specimens from across the globe—from sparkling crystals and gemstones to ancient fossils and rare minerals.

I was especially taken by the Turkish epidote, olive green with sparkling quartz between the powdery crystals, often referred to as “Forest Epidote” or “Fairy Quartz.” These specimens are primarily sourced from the Hakkâri Province and the Sivrihisar Massif region in EskiÅŸehir Province, Turkey.

Each piece at these rock and mineral shows, from amethyst to opal, has its own story—some millions of years in the making. What great discussions with the gent from the Herkimer mines. I walked from his booth with every intention of going – (when it is ethically reasonable to do so again).

I was intrigued by Moroccan and Afghani traditional silver and enamel jewelry. Another vendor spoke of peridot flowing from the Sapat Gali region in Pakistan’s Kaghan Valley—a treacherous 7–8 hour journey from Peshawar. The golden-lime color marked a dramatic shift from the earlier San Carlos material. It was dingy and looked more stained by dirty water than being possessed of beautiful colors.

Ontario rock and mineral shows are exotic bazaars where you can haggle over cut, clarity, and weight as though you were in Jaipur, the world-renowned hub for colored gemstone cutting.

Learning Opportunities at Ontario Rock and Mineral Shows

Educational experiences make Ontario rock and mineral shows invaluable for both beginners and seasoned collectors.

Mineral Identification

At  Ontario rock and mineral shows, expert on-site geologists and gemologists often help identify specimens and explain their physical properties.

Lapidary Arts

Demonstrations show how raw stones are cut and polished. Clubs from Ottawa, Kingston, Brantford, Scarborough, and the North York Faceting Guild frequently attend.

Geological Processes

Exhibits explain crystal formation, rock creation, and fossil history. Sudbury and Bancroft are especially strong in geological representation, often with government organizations providing maps and educational materials.

Earth Science Applications

Demonstrations highlight the use of minerals in technology, including batteries and electronics.

Discover Unique Treasures

From meteorites to rare high-value specimens, Ontario rock and mineral shows provide access to items seldom found in specialty shops.

Networking with Experts

These shows are ideal for connecting with knowledgeable dealers, geologists, and collectors.

Ethiopian Opal and International Trade

Ontario rock and mineral shows introduce collectors to world-class materials such as Ethiopian opal.

Sitting afront a pile of glittering treasure, as though the very rainbows of the heavens had been captured, a gaunt and quiet trader indicated that he would prefer to be un-photograped. His wares were Ethiopian opals. Such beauty is hard to imagine.  Welo opal from the Wollo province of Ethiopia has become a major competitor to Australian material due to its vivid play-of-color and affordability. It appeared that this merchant was directly connected to the mines.

Often there is significant red and even rare violet in Ethiopian opal. Most are hydrophane, meaning they absorb water and become more transparent when wet. The vendor demonstrated this by touching the stone to his tongue to show its stickiness. I tried and tasted something akin to an earthy gummy bear – I got his point.

Types of Ethiopian Opal

  • Welo Opal – Bright, multi-colored, translucent base.

  • Chocolate Opal (Mezezo/Shewa) – Brown base with contra luz play-of-color.

  • Black Ethiopian Opal – Naturally occurring or treated darker material.

  • Common Opal – Without play-of-color.

  •

Major Ontario Rock and Mineral Events

Several premier Ontario rock and mineral shows anchor the annual collecting calendar.

Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC Convention)

The PDAC conference is one of the world’s premier mining and prospecting events, drawing over 27,000 attendees to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Sponsored by major companies such as Rio Tinto, Anglo American, and BHP, it represents the industrial side of the minerals we admire at Ontario rock and mineral shows.

Gem Expo (Toronto)

Held in a ballroom setting, this show caters more to the urban dweller. There are workshops, wire wrapping classes, and a wide variety of interests—from collector-grade minerals to metaphysical crystals.

Bancroft Gemboree

The premier event in Ontario’s mineral calendar. Featuring gold panning, outdoor traders, and geologist-led tours, it celebrates Bancroft—Canada’s mineral capital. It is officiated over by Rocky the Rockhound.
